STS-92 was an ISS assembly flight that brought the Z1 truss, Control Moment Gyros, Pressurized Mating Adapter-3 (PMA-3) (mounted on a Spacelab pallet) and two DDCU (Heat pipes) to the space station. ITS Z1 is an early exterior framework to allow the first US solar arrays on flight 4A to be temporarily installed on Unity for early power. The Ku-band communication system supports early science capability and US television on 6A. The CMGs (Control Moment Gyros) weigh about 27 kilograms (60 lb) and provide non-propulsive (electrically powered) attitude control

STS-119 Discovery Final Approach to International Space Station

At 5:19:53: pm EDT, Space shuttle Discovery docked to the Pressurized Mating Adaptor on the front of the International Space Station’s Harmony module. Docking occurred over Lake Wells, western Australia. During the next eight days, the combined crews of Discovery and the station will install the S6 truss, complete three spacewalks and transfer hundreds of items between the two craft. Hatches between Discovery and the station will be opened at about 7 pm, followed by the traditional welcoming ceremony. At about 7:30 pm, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Astronaut will become a member of the station’s Expedition 18 crew and Sandra Magnus will become a member of Discovery’s crew. Magnus will have been a space station crew member for 121 days. Commander Lee Archambault leads Discovery’s crew of seven, along with Pilot Tony Antonelli, and Mission Specialists Joseph Acaba, John Phillips, Steve Swanson, Richard Arnold and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Koichi Wakata on mission STS-119 to the International Space Station. The STS-119 crew members are flying the S6 truss segment and installing the final set of power-generating solar arrays to the International Space Station. The S6 truss will complete the backbone of the station and provide one-fourth of the total power needed to support a crew of six.

Discovery Launches To The International Space Station (STS-133)

airboyd.tv Courtesy NASA Discovery launches on a mission to deliver the Permanent Multipurpose Module and the humanoid Robonaut 2 to the International Space Station. STS-133 Commander Steve Lindsey, Pilot Eric Boe and Mission Specialists Alvin Drew, Steve Bowen, Michael Barratt and Nicole Stott delivered a new module and an external stowage platform to the International Space Station as well as equipment and supplies. During space shuttle Discovery’s almost nine days at the station, Bowen and Drew performed two spacewalks for maintenance work and installation of new components. Discovery’s visit to the station was extended by two days so its crew could help outfit the Permanent Multipurpose Module Leonardo that it delivered. Leonardo had visited the station seven times before as a cargo carrier before being refurbished to serve as a permanent 2472-cubic-foot addition to the orbiting laboratory. Among the 6000 pounds of Leonardo cargo was Robonaut 2, a human upper torso-like robot that could be a precursor of devices to help during spacewalks. About 2000 pounds of additional cargo for the station was carried on the shuttle’s middeck. This was the 35th shuttle mission to the station and the final flight of Discovery.

2011 Shelby GT500 at Virginia International Raceway Grand West Course

The engineers at Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) recently did some track testing of the new 2011 Shelby GT500 at Virginia International Raceway (VIR). This was to test the cars ultimate limits at one of the worlds most technical and grueling road courses. Vehicle Dynamics engineer Gene Martindale pilots the 2011 Shelby GT500 coupe equipped with the new aluminum 550hp, 5.4-liter engine and the optional SVT Performance Package. With a lap time of 2:58.48, the 2011 Shelby GT500 with the SVT Performance Package is over eight seconds a lap faster around VIR than the 2010 model. That’s a lap time comparable to six-figure supercars!
