Do employers ever offer a third party home purchase, as part of a relocation package for new employees?

I’m in the middle of a job search. However, I just purchased a home (last September). I currently live in Virginia. I desire to relocate to Washington, Colorado or Alaska. But I’ll only be able to do so if a company buys out my home. Renting my house out is not really an option, I already own a rental, and don’t want to take on another home.

I’ve occasionally heard of such a practice, but would be doubtful that you’d find such a company in this tight economy unless your skill set is so highly valued that the company has no choice but to meet your demands.

My company has been managing expenses closely, and we’ve kept a close eye on hiring related expenses. Perhaps another year in a better economy.

You might consider asking for an upfront bonus that would match the real estate fee it would take to sell you home and moving expenses, along with a housing stipend for a given period. It’s not 100% safe, but might be a more reasonable proposal for a potential employer.

Good luck with your job search.
